Peak Flow Meter
A peak flow meter for asthma is like a thermometer for a fever - it helps you monitor what's going on inside your lungs by measuring airflow out of the lungs. The meter can tell you if your airways are narrowing well before asthma symptoms begin. Learn how to use a peak flow meter, how to find your "personal best," and how to set your peak flow zones.
Pulmonary Function Tests Podcast
These tests assess lung volumes, capacities, rates of flow, and gas exchange. Different procedures measure lung function in different ways.
Pulmonary Tests and Procedures
Pulse Oximetry
Pulse oximetry is a test used to measure the oxygen level (oxygen saturation) of the blood. It is an easy, painless measure of how well oxygen is being sent to parts of your body furthest from your heart, such as the arms and legs.
Pulmonary Function Tests
Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are noninvasive tests that show how well the lungs are working.
Peak Flow Measurement
Peak flow measurement is a quick test to measure air flowing out of the lungs.
Bronchodilator Reversibility Testing
This test may be done to help your health care provider give you a more accurate prognosis or craft your treatment plan.
Chest X-Ray
A chest X-ray is an imaging test that uses X-rays to look at the structures and organs in your chest. It can help your health care provider see how well your lungs and heart are working. Certain heart problems can cause changes in your lungs. Certain diseases can cause changes in the structure of the heart or lungs.
Lung Scan
A lung scan is an imaging test to look at your lungs and help diagnose certain lung problems. A lung scan may also be used to see how well treatment is working.
Lobectomy
A lobectomy is a surgery to remove one of the lobes of the lungs.
Lung Transplant
A lung transplant is surgery done to remove a diseased lung and replace it with a healthy lung from another person.
CT Scan of the Chest
CT scan is a type of imaging test. It uses X-rays and computer technology to make images or slices of the body. A CT scan can make detailed pictures of any part of the body, including the bones, muscles, fat, organs, and blood vessels. They are more detailed than regular X-rays.
BiPap
Some medical problems can make it hard for you to breathe. In these cases, you might benefit from bilevel positive airway pressure. It is commonly known as “BiPap” or “BPap.” It is a type of ventilator—a device that helps with breathing.
